Connecting GPS and Palm

There are different ways to connect your GPS to your Palm.

It is quite unlikely to find a cable that fits both the GPS and the Palm given the large number of connector styles.

If you don't find yours or prefer a do-it-youself approach, you can easily realise the connection by means of a couple of cables and connectors readily available in specialised shops or on the internet. Or, with some patience and a soldering iron, you can make your custom cable.

A very elegant solution was proposed by Patrick Townsend-Wells in a technical article. It's based on a set of cables and adapters to connect the Palm to the GPS and either of them to the PC when needed. You can find the original article below as Fourth Solution.

First solution

This is the simplest. You have to buy and connect some cables and adaptors. The scheme is the following:

You'll need:

- a serial cable for your Palm;

- a serial cable for your GPS;

- a null-modem male-to male adapter;

Pay attention when you buy the two serial cables: you'll need those specific that fit you GPS and Palm models.

Second solution

This is also rather simple, but bulkier. The scheme is the following:

You'll need:

- a serial cable for your Palm;

- a serial cable for your GPS;

- a null-modem cable;

- two gender changers.

All the null-modem cables that I have seen are equipped with female connectors, as the serial cables for the Palm and GPS. To put them together you'll need also the two female-to-male gender-changers.

Pay attention when you buy the two serial cables: you'll need those specific that fit you GPS and Palm models.

Third solution

If you think that the other solutions are a little bit bulky, you can improve them by making your own cable starting from the two serial cables. You'll have to cut away the two DB9 connectors and solder in the appropriate way the wires.

This solution requires some experience with the soldering iron. A multimeter will also be needed to identify correctly the wires to be soldered.

The connection scheme is the following:

Fourth solution

This was proposed in a technical article by Patrick Townsend-Wells and published on PGForum. It's a very neat solution in particular for those pilots that want to be able to connect their Palm and GPS to a PC without removing them from the cockpit.
