Using HyperTerminal to transfer data to your PC

From the Windows Start menu, run the HyperTerminal program (usually located under Accessories/Communications.)

In the dialog window that will appear, enter a name for the new connection, "CompetitionPilot" for example, and choose an icon.

After pressing the OK button, you will be shown a new window that allows to configure the serial port. From the "Connect:" drop-down list choose the serial port to which you will connect your palm unit and hit "OK".

Now you have to set the transfer speed from the "Bits per second:" list. 19200, for example. The other parameters can left to thier default values.

It is important to check that the "Bits per second:" value matches the "Baud rate" value in the CompetitionPilot export page:

When you press the "OK" button, you might get the following error message:

This means that another program is using the same serial port. Quite often, the "culprit" is HotSync, the program that is used to install applications on the palm.

To solve the problem, find the HotSync icon in the windows task bar and click on it with the left mouse button. If a "tick" is visible near "Serial", remove it by left-clicking on it and try restarting the HyperTerminal configuration. Do not forget to enable the serial port again in HotSync when the data transfer is completed.

If the error message does not appear, in the HyperTerminal task bar (in the lowest part of the window) the string "Connected to" followed by the connection duration will be shown.

Select the menu item Transfer/Acquire text... to save on a file the data that will arrive from CompetitionPilot.

In the dialog window that will open, choose the destination folder and the file name (for example: task1.igc if you are exporting the track log) and hit the Start button.

In CompetitionPilot, choose serial as a destination and the correct Baud rate value and press the Export button.

At the end of the transfer, the HyperTerminal window will show the data received. For example, if you exported a track log, the window content should look like this:

End the transfer procedure by selecting the menu item Transfer/Acquire text/Terminate.
